Wacky Wacky West (board game)

Age: 9+ Players: 2-4 Playing time: 30-60 min.

Publisher: Mayfair Games

  • Game of the Year 1991, Germany
  • Deutscher Spielepreis 1991 (German award for board games - 3rd place)

(first published in Germany by Hans im Glück as "Drunter & Drüber"

Just south of nowhere, there's the junction of the Mayfair & Rossdorf RR and the Turvy Trunk Line. Springing up from the desert like a tumbleweed lies the eccentric little town of Rossdorf. Like most western towns, Rossdorf has a Land Agent: Guy Dough, the brother of that wicked varmint Black Benny. A shrewd opportunist, Guy's done sold all the town land ('ceptin' the outhouses) four times over! Every acre in town that ain't got an outhouse on it is owned by the miners, the railroads, AND the fort captain. Just about a year ago, miners digging in the shadow of Fort Rossdorf struck the mother lode! But it wasn't gold, and it wasn't silver. No, my friend, it was just a little spring. Not any ordinary spring, though! It was a torrent of that mind-marbling drink the locals call “Wacky Water”!

Now that water's done what the sun and the wind couldn't do: it's made those landholders brave enough to take matters into their own hands. Now they'll use whatever means they can to bowl over the competition and lay claim to the only fertile spots left in town! Now the only thing stoppin' 'em is the Town Charter Amendment #5, which states: “No landholder may move, remove, or detonate any outhouse without a majority vote of the Town Citizens...” Now one thing's for sure: something’s gonna stink in Rossdorf, purty darn soon.....

In Wacky Wacky West you and your fellow townfolk place track tiles, street tiles, and river tiles hoping to destroy your rivals' buildings. Every time someone tries to build over a precious outhouse, the town votes! You try to enlist your supporters (represented by cards) to vote with you to stop or encourage the play of certain tiles -perhaps saving some of your buildings or taking out those of your dastardly opponents.

CATAN – 15th Anniversary Edition

Age: 10+ Players: 3-6 Playing time: 45-90 min.

About the game

To celebrate the 15th anniversary of Catan, an exclusive special edition of the base game and its 5-6 player extension was published. The strong, compartmentalized box contains thick, beautifully illustrated map hexagons and specially designed playing pieces, all made from sturdy wood – a delight for fans and collectors!

The combination with the CATAN Seafarer expansion released after 2003 is limited due to the thicker hex fields and the lack of a frame piece.

CATAN Traders & Barbarians Extension 5-6 player
CATAN - Traders & Barbarians - Extension for 5-6 Players

Entdecker - Im Reich der Wüstensöhne (not available in English)

Age: 6+ Players: 2-4 Playing time: 30-40 min.

Publisher: KOSMOS

Ten years after the "Entdecker" first set sail in a beautiful new Teuber world of games, Klaus Teuber is now sending them to the "Realm of the Desert Sons".

You and your opponents slip into the role of traders and explore the desert with caravans. You are looking for valuable commodities such as incense, myrrh, salt, and precious stones.

You and your opponents discover card after card, each of them depicting either desert of or parts of oases. If you can place a part of an oasis so that it fits, you may put one of your explorer figures on it.

Once an oasis is completely discovered, you evaluate it. On the oasis card, action spaces  with commodities, camels, water, and rumors are depicted. Since all explorer figures are of different heights, each player opts for one action, in descending order of height of their figure.

  • If you opt for a commodity, you receive a corresponding commodity tile and place it on one of your camel cards.
  • If you choose a camel, you receive a camel card that offers space for two more commodities.
  • If you decide in favor of water, you are less helpless in the desert - for example, you can move on with you caravan or buy a second caravan.
  • If you choose a rumor tile, you can increase or decrease the value of a commodity on the rumor board by 1 or 2 gold.

After the last card from the pile is drawn, everyone takes one more turn. Then the game ends and you win if you have the most valuable commodities.

CATAN Geographies - Germany

Age: 10+ Players: 3-4 Playing time: 45-75 min.

Publisher: KOSMOS

Settle Germany! Build town halls, erect the Brandenburg Gate, adorn Dresden with the Frauenkirche, let the Wartburg Castle tower over Eisenach, and build the Longest Road between Hamburg and Nuremberg.

The map of Germany is composed of terrain hexes and fields with important German cities and landmarks. The terrain hexes produce the resources lumber, wool, brick, ore, and grain. You need these resources to build roads and place town halls on city intersections and landmarks on landmark intersections. On each turn, it is determined which of the terrains produce resources. This is done by rolling 2 dice - which is why each terrain has a production number. If, for example, a "3" is rolled, all terrains marked with a "3" produce their respective resource type.

To receive production, you must have a town hall adjacent to a terrain whose number was rolled. At the beginning of the game, each player already owns 3 town halls, which is why there should be plenty of resource income. And even if sometimes you lack certain resources, don't worry about it. You may trade resources to your heart's content.

Building a road costs you 1 lumber and 1 brick. Roads are used to reach the intersections where you can build town halls or landmarks.

Each town hall costs 1 lumber, 1 wool, 1 brick, and 1 grain and is worth 1 victory point. Therefore, each player has 3 victory points at the beginning of the game. You win the game if you are the first to reach 12 victory points in a 3-player game and 10 victory points in a 4-player game.

The landmarks have a special status. If you pay 2 ore and 1 grain to place a landmark on its associated intersection, you will not receive any resource production from the surrounding terrains, because landmarks are neutral. Instead, you receive the reward depicted next to the illustration of the respective landmark in the outer area of the game board, and you may place a town hall on this illustration - another victory point for you.

The game includes 12 detailed landmark pieces, which you can build on the corresponding landmark intersections: Berlin's Brandenburg Gate, the Cologne Cathedral, Lübeck's Holsten Gate, the Dresden Frauenkirche, Trier's Porta Nigra, and so forth. But not only the monuments are eye candies ... Michael Menzel illustrated the huge Germany game map with loving attention to detail - no two terrain hexes look the same, each of them was painted individually.

CATAN - Cities & Knights for Windows / Mac

Digital CATAN Adaptation for Windows XP / Vista / 7 and Mac OS X up to 10.8

Developer: Brettspielwelt GmbH

Publisher: CATAN GmbH

Please note: The game is not available anymore. It has been replaced with CATAN Universe.

For the first time, the most popular CATAN expansion was also available as a PC adaptation with strong computer opponents. It took a long time to fine-tune the artificial intelligence of the computer opponents so that the game would be challenging for experienced CATAN players too. For this reason, Klaus Teuber, the designer of the original board game, was closely involved in the development process, creating the new version jointly with the CATAN Online World team.

There are a total of eight different computer opponents to choose from. The extensive campaign includes many varied scenarios, from the simple Base Game to diverse Seafarers scenarios (Oceania and Heading for New Shores, among others) to Cities & Knights scenarios in combination with Seafarers (Greater Catan C&K, among others).

The individual scenarios of the campaign can be activated step by step; afterwards, you can also play the scenarios individually, using different options such as “Friendly Robber” or “Card Stack”. Spoken story sequences develop the thread of the campaign story. An interactive tutorial helps newcomers get started with the game, and for the skilled player extensive game statistics are available.

  • CATAN base game, Seafarers, and Cities & Knights in one game
  • Campaign with 20 varied scenarios
  • Story sequences between the scenarios, with voice output
  • Strong computer opponents
  • Game settings can be used in any combination
  • Comprehensive tutorial

Dice Game

Anno 1701 - Das Kartenspiel (not available in English)

Age: 10+ Players: Playing time: 60-90 min.

Publisher: KOSMOS

On behalf of the Queen, your ship reaches the coast of an unknown, fertile island in 1701. An ideal place to build a settlement! Also on behalf of the queen, your opponent founds a settlement on the opposite side of the island.

Who will lead their settlement to success faster and win the queen's favor?

Each of you builds their settlement with cards showing pioneers, village centers, and landscapes. It is your goal to upgrade your pioneers to settlers, the settlers to citizens, and the citizens to merchants. Because the higher the ranks of your residents, the higher the queen's favor in the form of favor points. If you are the first to reach 7 favor points, you win the game.

To upgrade the residents, you need goods. A settler is satisfied with food and cloth. Citizens and merchants are more demanding. They need rum and tobacco for their social advancement. You can't harvest rum and tobacco in the regions of your settlement.

To get these luxury goods, you have to go on a trade voyage with your ship. But dangers lurk along the way. A fight against pirates can seriously damage your ship. To avoid this, you should take precautions and upgrade your settlement with cannon foundries or weaving mills. It will make your ship stronger and faster, increasing your chances to discover foreign peoples you can buy the coveted luxury goods from.

Anno 1701 - Das Brettspiel (not available in English)

Age: 10+ Players: 3-4 Playing time: 90-120 min.

Publisher: KOSMOS

In 1701, the queen commissions you to explore a distant archipelago and build a flourishing settlement. She will reward you for this with favor points.

At the beginning of the game, each of you has already discovered an island - their home island - where they own a small settlement with a village center and simple settlers. Although these beginnings are modest, the terrain tiles of a home island offer enough goods to build important buildings and ships there over time.

The game board shows a vast sea with cut-out areas in which hexagonal island tiles are laid out face down. You explore the archipelago with your ships and establish colonies. If you want to reap royal favor points, you would do well to establish your colonies on island tiles with tobacco and rum plantations. These goods are needed to settle citizens, merchants, and aristocrats on the home islands, who in turn earn you royal favor points.

The queen also rewards the player who achieves the greatest sea power or the greatest trading power. If you want to achieve the greatest sea power or trading power, you must found colonies on island tiles with cannon or trade symbols or build corresponding buildings on your island.

Anno 1701 is an exciting race for the queen's favor. If you skillfully trade goods and gold with your opponents, use clever tactics with your ships and do not risk a riot among your inhabitants, in the end you will be ahead of the game and the first to achieve the 5 favor points required to win.

The trade between the players and the constant scramble for the greatest sea power, the trading power, and the satisfaction of the inhabitants guarantee a high level of interactivity.

CATAN Seefahrer - Die Kolonien (not available in English)

Age: 12+ Players: 3-4 Playing time: 90-150 min.

Publisher: KOSMOS

To mark the 10th anniversary of the CATAN - Seafarers Extension, KOSMOS-Verlag brought out the exciting scenario The Colonies. Long-time CATAN fans will remember that Die Siedler von CATAN – Das Buch zum Spielen ("The Settlers of CATAN – The Book for Playing") already featured a scenario named The Colonies. The 10th anniversary scenario is a revised version with additional game components.

New frame parts, overview cards, additional sea hexes, volcano hexes, gold river hexes, jungle hexes, and 92 colony tiles are also part of the anniversary package, as well as completely new playing pieces created for Catan: 4 warships, 20 bases, and a black pirate.

The Catanian home island is located on the left side of the game board; on the right side, there are two large islands separated by water - the colonial region, whose nature is still veiled at the moment, meaning that the nine terrain hexes each of these islands consists of challenge the players' spirit of discovery.

Tintenherz (not available in English)

Age: 10+ Players: 2-6 Playing time: 30-45 min.

Publisher: KOSMOS

Based on the novel "Tintenherz" by Cornelia Funke.

Showdown in Capricorn's village. The dreaded shadow has appeared: All players must find the right words together so that the shadow turns against its master, the evil Capricorn, and the world is freed from this evil. To do this, they have to support Meggie and Fenoglio and use the displayed alphabetic characters to form words for given tasks.

If Meggie reaches the goal first, all players have won together. However, if Capricorn is the first to reach the goal, the game is lost ...

The board is composed of twenty-five squares with partly face-up and partly face-down letter tiles placed on them. At the beginning of the game, 12 of a total of 25 letter tiles are face up, i.e., their letter side points upwards. The playing pieces representing the heroine Meggie and the evil adversary Capricorn are placed on the starting space of a track consisting of nine circular spaces along the edge of the game board. The figure of Fenoglio, who supports Meggie, and the black figure of the "shadow" who wants to help Capricorn to victory move across the squares of the game board that contain the letter tiles.

The common goal of all players is not to let evil - in the form of Capricorn - win. To this end, problems have to be solved within a time frame set by an hourglass, meaning that you must find the words requested on task cards, for example: "Name a tree" or "Name a bird."

When solving a problem, you may only use the letters that are currently revealed - however, a letter may appear multiple times in the word. For example, in accordance with this rule the three letters "P", O"," and "E" could be used to form the word "POPE."  If you have found a valid word, you are rewarded with a book chip.

For finding the longest word, you even receive 2 chips. Each of you can only propose one word. If the participating players have found enough words (the more players participate, the more words must be found), Meggie is moved forward one space on the track, toward the target - otherwise, the evil Capricorn must be moved. Which letters are face up and which face down is subject to constant change. A letter tile the good Fenoglio stops on may be revealed.

The evil "shadow", however, is more powerful: all of the letter tiles it crosses must be turned over again. Step by step, fate in the form of two dice decides which of the two playing pieces - Fenoglio or the "shadow" - moves in which direction and how many spaces.

The game ends as soon as either Meggie or Capricorn reaches the last space of the track. If Meggie arrives before Capricorn, the evil is banished and all of you have won the game, although the player who was able to collect the most "books" contributed a bit more to victory. If Capricorn reaches the last space of the track before Meggie, then all of you have lost the game.

Entdecker - Im Reich der Jadegöttin (not available in English)

Age: 8+ Players: 2-4 Playing time: 45-60 min.

Publisher: KOSMOS

The game follows the tradition of the popular games Entdecker and Die neuen Entdecker.

Entdecker - Im Reich der Jadegöttin (translates “Explorers - In the Realm of the Jade Goddess”) does not just shift the scene of the action from the high seas to the deep jungle but concentrates completely on the essential element of the explorer games: discovery.

At the beginning of the game, a square cross consisting of a central tile and four “arms” is laid out. Each arm is divided into five square tiles that show parts of a jungle and parts of "forgotten cities" in the realm of the jade goddess.

With your jeeps, you penetrate deeper and deeper into the jungle by placing a new, matching tile while standing on a tile of an arm or on a tile that has already been discovered. Whenever you place a tile, you may - but do not have to - place one or more of your own archaeologists there.

As soon as a tile is placed, that completes a district of the forgotten city (this is the case when contiguous parts of the forgotten city are completely surrounded by jungle or the edge of the playing field defined by the cross), the artefacts and gold pieces depicted in this district are excavated and distributed.

The player who left the most archaeologists in the completed district receives the lion's share of the  artifacts, the player with the second most archeologists receives half, etc. - The gold found in the district is not divided up in this fashion. Everyone who has at least one archaeologist in the district receives as many gold pieces as depicted in the district. It is therefore important that at least one of your archaeologists participates in each excavation.

Those who "discover" on their own will hardly have a chance of victory. Gold is particularly important to prevail in the struggle for valuable artifacts: it allows you to buy bonus turns, place various archaeologist on a tile, or exchange artifacts.

Ultimately, all artifacts are worth one point, but if you succeed in assembling complete statues of the jade goddess, each consisting of four parts, from the various artefacts, you will get many bonus points that are decisive for victory.

CATAN - Dice Game Plus

Age: 7+ Players: 2-4 Playing time: 20-40 min.

Publisher: CATAN Studio

In the summer of 2006, Klaus Teuber sent in two prototypes for a CATAN dice game. The first prototype was more easily accessible, the second one was strongly based on the board game but a little less accessible to people who did not know the board game.

Klaus' favorite was the second prototype because it provided a more Catanian feel, and thus more competition and interaction. In the end, however, the publisher opted for the more easily accessible dice game. Klaus was able to understand this decision but also wanted to make the second prototype available to all CATAN fans, under the name Dice Game Plus.

CATAN for Xbox 360

Digital CATAN Adaptation for Xbox 360

Developer: Big Huge Games

Publisher: Microsoft

CATAN's Xbox 360 adaptation stands out because of the reliable artificial intelligence of its computer opponents and its beautiful graphic design.

Big Huge Games, one of the top developers of PC games, was excited to tackle this project. Brian Reynolds, the developer of such classics as “Civilization II” and “Rise of Nations,” is himself a big fan of the board game and specializes in the realization of demanding AI opponents. A very productive collaboration with Klaus Teuber developed, resulting in a most outstanding AI.

The developers of Big Huge Games have accomplished awesome things in other areas as well. The game adapts very well to Xbox‘s simple operational concept and also allows a smooth game flow over the Internet. Up to 4 players compete according to the rules of the CATAN base game. Additional features such as permanently available communication via headset are a perfect fit for a highly interactive game such as CATAN.

"I had no doubts that Brian Reynolds would do a good job, and the first version of the game already exceeded even my greatest expectations. The AI is so good that, as a start, I lost several games in a row. This version for Xbox is really an awesome achievement."

Simply CATAN

Age: 10+ Players: 3-4 Playing time: 30 min.

Publisher: SimplyFun

Simply CATAN is a simplified version of the CATAN base game published in 2006 in the USA by SimplyFun.

Differences to the base game:

For beginners, the rules provide recommended starting positions of harbors and terrain hexes, while still providing enough variation to make for a different game each time you play. Also, playing to 7 Victory Points instead of 10 speeds up the time to play. Other than this, the same rules apply.
