CATAN - Chocolate Edition

Age: 10+ Player: 2-4 Playtime: 10-15 Min.

Publisher:  Games4Motion

“CATAN - Chocolate Edition” was an abridged version of the classic board game “CATAN.” You harvest the resources wool, brick, lumber, grain, and ore, all of which you can trade with your opponents. You use these resources to build roads, settlements, and knights. Nothing new so far.

But here comes the special feature! The game pieces were 32 chocolate bars made from the finest Belgian chocolate. The game rules are also simplified. To determine the resources for all players, a spinner is used instead of the dice. To build something, you pay the familiar resource combinations; however, you place the chocolate bars in front of yourself. The larger your empire, the more victory points you have. The first player to reach 5 victory points wins. It pays to settle skillfully because at the end of the game each player may eat their display.

Publisher: KOSMOS

Sculpt, guess, have fun! When it is your turn, choose one of your opponents’ Dohdles (= riddles sculpted in modeling dough). Clue spaces determine whether you can ask two questions about this Dohdle or ask for one of its letters. But watch out: Everyone’s listening! If your question is too obvious, you help the other players (who can also guess) along. Then you have to act fast and be the first player to toss your guess cube into the guess funnel. If your proposed solution is correct, you – and potentially also the creator of the Dohdle – move forward on the scoring track.

CATAN - World Championship Special 2014

Age: 10+ Player: 3-6* Playtime: 45-90 min.

Publisher: KOSMOS

Berlin in the heart of Catan? Yes, because on the occasion of the CATAN World Cup 2014 in Berlin, CATAN GmbH, in cooperation with Kosmos-Verlag, published two hex fields with Berlin landmarks. "CATAN" can be played with both fields and those who settle on a Berlin field receive a special advantage.

The desert and the landscape field on which the number chip with the “2” was placed are replaced by the two Berlin fields. Anyone who owns a settlement or a city on a Berlin space receives the raw material of the landscape on which the robber was drawn whenever a “7” is rolled. Robber? No, that is not entirely correct, because instead of the robber acts the sympathetic Berlin bear, which is made up of 2 parts and which the Catanians asks for donations.

CATAN - Ancient Egypt

Age: 10+ Player: 3-4 Playtime: 60-90 Min.

Publisher: Mayfair Games

CATAN - Collector’s Edition - Ancient Egypt™ transports settlers on a journey through time to the realm of the pharaohs.

There are three different scenarios included: the base game, allowing you to play the game you know and love in an Egyptian setting; “Help from the Gods” which introduces the Egyptian gods to the game; and “The Great Pyramid” which tasks players with building a wonder of the world in addition to their normal settlement and expansion.

The Base Game in an Egyptian Setting

The base game in CATAN - Ancient Egypt features the classic CATAN gameplay you know and love in a fantastically realized historical setting. In the base game, you’re settling not a randomly created island, but a randomly created landscape of ancient Egypt. You begin the game with two settlements and two oxcarts, which take the place of roads. As you play the game you’ll build oxcarts, found new settlements and upgrade settlements to cities, which have a distinctly Egyptian flavor. The resources in the game are brick, grain, papyrus, cattle and stone and you can trade with your fellow players to get a missing resource.

The oversized development cards in the game feature fantastic Egyptian-themed illustrations and the victory point development cards are dedicated to the cultural and architectural achievements of the ancient Egyptians, achievements that surprise and astound us today. Instead of knights the deck contains mercenary cards and the first player to get three mercenaries in play is granted the Largest Mercenary Army card for two victory points. Likewise, the first player to connect a route of five oxcarts is granted the Longest Trade Route card for two victory points.

Help from the Gods

In “Help from the Gods” players will be introduced to ten Egyptian deities such as Amun, Horus and Isis. When these gods grant their favor to a particular settler, they can achieve fantastic results which opens up new strategies not normally available in the base game. Amun, for example, allows a player to exchange one resource with the supply at a 2:1 rate. Ptha on the other hand, makes it easier to build an oxcart while Isis protects players from losing resources when a 7 is rolled. You can only have the favor of one god at a time and once that god has granted its favor twice, you must trade it back and take a different card. Knowing when to call on the gods is the key to victory in this scenario.

The Great Pyramid

Finally there is the “Great Pyramids” scenario, which lets players walk in the footsteps of history as they struggle to balance their normal settlement with the construction of the first Wonder of the World: The Great Pyramid!
The first new challenge presented in this scenario is the mighty Nile River. Players must build boats to connect their trade networks across the Nile but even more important, access to the river allows players to contribute to the building of the Great Pyramid.

Contributing to the pyramid is vital because every time you contribute a block to the mighty structure, you will enjoy the Vizier’s Favor for a brief time. The Vizier’s Favor allows you to trade any one resource to the supple for a resource of your choice once per turn. Even better, when a 7 is rolled, the robber only steals resources if you have more than 9 in hand. However, the Vizier is fickle and as soon as another player contributes a block to the Great Pyramid, the Vizier grants him favor instead.

Sadly, players must also contend with Pharaoh’s wrath. The player who has contributed the fewest blocks to the Great Pyramid receives the Pharaoh’s Curse, which reduces their victory points by 1, while all other players receive Pharaoh’s Blessing, which is worth an additional victory point.

The Great Pyramid scenario ends in one of two ways: when a player reaches 11 victory points or when the pyramid is finished. You see, every time a 7 is rolled, in addition to the usual effects, Pharaoh adds a block to the pyramid. So this scenario could end much faster than normal, forcing players to fight for the lead at all times!

In addition to the game pieces described above, CATAN - Collector’s Edition - Ancient Egypt also contains an almanac giving players a brief account of the historical events depicted in the game, from 3000 BC till Ptolemaic times. This almanac is lavishly illustrated by Michael Menzel.

The game concept of "The Great Pyramid" is similar to the game concept of "Cheops," a historic scenario published in German in the late 90s of the past century. A major criticism of "Cheops" had been that it didn't allow a variable set-up of the game map. In response to this criticism, "The Great Pyramid" offers a variable set-up.

Wien CATAN (no English version available)

Age: 10+ Player: 3-4 Playtime: 75 Min.

Publisher: KOSMOS

With this limited edition, the Austrian metropolis can be settled. The game board shows old Vienna with its rural surroundings in Catanian hexagon format. It's not just about building roads and villages here, but also building famous sights such as the Ferris wheel or St. Stephen's Cathedral.

Welcome to medieval Vienna!

Up until 1850, Vienna was - due to the city walls - about the same size as today's 1st district.

From 1850 onwards, the villages in the area around Vienna gradually merged with Vienna to form today's metropolis. Old Vienna was in the area of the Stephandom depicted on the game board. The villages are surrounded by forests, fields and vineyards where wood is cut, grain is harvested and wine is picked. In the west, in the mountainous Vienna Woods, stone is mined and clay mining is also documented for the Vienna area. Like the settlers of the Middle Ages, you set up settlements on the local fields (fields with coats of arms), lay roads and build part of the many Viennese landmarks.

The construction of roads, settlements and landmarks costs raw materials. In your turn you roll 2 dice. Each player now receives a resource from this landscape for each settlement that he has on a landscape with the number rolled. So the hill country provides clay, the forest wood, that Mountains stone, the arable land grain and the vineyards grapes.

If you got to clay and wood in this way, you can build roads to a neighboring location space in order to build another settlement there for 1 clay, 1 wood, 1 grain and 1 wine each. If you roll a “7”, you can move the robber who, to the chagrin of your fellow players, blocks the production of the landscape on which you placed him. You do not always have the raw materials necessary for a construction. And so the barter dominates the action: stone for wine, clay for wood - the exchange takes place according to the current building project.

If you are building a landmark for 2 stones and 1 grain, place a cardboard cutout with an illustration of the landmark on the corresponding landmark space on the game board. You receive an associated card that counts 1 victory point and gives you an advantage. For example, as the builder of the Lueger Church, you can immediately use a street free of charge.

If you buy a development card for 1 stone, 1 wine and 1 grain, you also receive a game advantage. For example, you can relocate the robber with a vigilante card or demand 2 raw material cards of a certain type from each player with the “right of defeat” card.

If you have drawn the “Richard the Lionheart” card from the face-down development card deck, you will receive an additional victory point. You can find out what Richard the Lionheart had to do with Vienna in a supplementary sheet that provides information about the relationship between the game material and the history of Vienna. Each settlement and each landmark is worth one victory point.

There are also special victory point cards that are given to those who either own the longest street or who have played the most vigilante cards.

Whoever spreads out skillfully and is the first to reach 12 victory points in a three-player game and 10 first in a four-player game wins.

CATAN – Merchants of Europe

Age: 12+ Player: 3-4 Playtime: 60-150 min.

Publisher: Mayfair Games

Welcome to late medieval Europe! “Merchants of Europe” is quite different from the CATAN base game - but no less exciting and interactive.

The trading posts in “Merchants of Europe” are the equivalent to the settlements in the CATAN base game.

We start with 3 trading posts in late medieval Europe, which is made up of terrain hexes. At the beginning of the turn the dice are rolled. The terrain hexes produce the resources lumber, wool, grain, ore, and salt. Each player with a trading post adjacent to a terrain marked with the number rolled receives that terrain's resource type.

We use the resources to expand across the game map. In our trading posts, we recruit merchants who establish new trading posts in distant cities of Europe and thus give us access to new resources. We open up new trade routes, along which we send our caravans to the opponents' trading posts.

When the caravans have arrived there, we deliver commodities. And that's what this exciting strategy game is all about: being the first player to deliver all his commodities to the opponents' trading posts and thus becoming the most successful merchant prince.

Madagascar CATAN Junior (no English version available)

Age: 6+ Player: 2-4 Playtie: 25-35 Min.

Publisher: KOSMOS

Based on the successful junior version of CATAN, Madagascar also harvests, swaps and builds.

The players are out and about with the traveling circus as the lion Alex, the hippopotamus Gloria, the zebra Marty or the giraffe Melman. At the beginning of the game, each player places two circus tents and two circus wagons on the board. The winner is whoever is the first to set up the five remaining circus tents from his supply on the board.

If you want to set up a big top at a location, you have to send a circus wagon there beforehand. To build and equip circus tents and wagons you need “this and that”: wood, wool and sand for the arena and cocktails and popcorn for the audience - all things that should not be missing from a real circus show.

To get “this and that” you roll the dice. Each player receives a "This and That" tile from the supply for each of his circus tents that border a landscape with the number rolled. The more circus tents you have built, the higher the chances of getting “this and that”. If only there weren't the annoying animal inspectors who persistently occupy landscapes and thus block the supply of some “this and that”.

Anyone who is clever trusts in the help of the penguins. Since the penguins in Madagascar love to laze around on the sandy beach, eat popcorn and sip cocktails, they only have to be supplied with the mentioned "this and that" ingredients and they have a lot of tricks up their sleeves. For example, they help to drive away the unpleasant animal inspector.

And if you've run out of a certain “this and that”, you might find it on the market.

Baden-Württemberg CATAN (no English version available)

Age: 10+ Player: 3-4 Playtime: 45-90 min.

Publisher: KOSMOS

The Baden-Württemberg (a federal state of Germany) map is made up of landscape fields and fields with important cities in Baden-Württemberg.

The raw materials wood, wool, clay, ore and grain are extracted in the landscape spaces. The raw materials are required to build roads and to erect town halls and landmarks on the city spaces.

And this is how you get new raw materials: In each round, it is determined which landscapes generate income. This is done with 2 dice - and therefore every landscape has a yield number. If a “3” is rolled, all landscapes with a “3” discard income. In order to benefit from an income, you must have a town hall on the landscape with the number rolled. At the beginning of the game everyone already owns 3 town halls, so earnings are to be expected.

And if certain raw materials should still be missing, that's not that bad. After all, the raw materials can be traded to your heart's content. Roads cost wood and one each Loam and are used to reach city spaces in order to build town halls or landmarks there. Each town hall costs once each for wood, wool, clay and grain and is worth 1 victory point. Thus, each player already has 3 victory points at the start of the game.

If you manage to be the first to score 12 victory points in a three-player game and 10 first in a four-player game, you win.

The landmarks occupy a special position. If you erect a landmark on a city space by paying 2 ore and 1 grain, you do not receive any income for it, as the landmarks are neutral. But he receives a reward that differs from landmark to landmark and is shown next to the respective illustration on the game board. You can then place your own town hall on the illustration, which is worth another victory point.

In contrast to other Catan games, there is no robber in Baden-Württemberg-Catan. The "Ländle" has one of the lowest crime rates anywhere Germany, so robber attacks are a rarity here. This is what Baden-Württemberg is famous for as a land of inventors. No other federal state has more inventors and more patents filed. You can get to know some of the most famous inventors and their inventions in the game. But everything has its price: Instead of the robber, the “inventor” is up to mischief, always looking for support from wealthy patrons - the players. But whoever brings the most inventors into play can secure the victory point for the “Greatest Inventor”. Building the longest trade route can bring you another victory point.

The pile of development cards also contains additional, direct victory points: Significant achievements of the state of Baden-Württemberg.

Spinnengift und Krötenschleim (Boardgame - not available in English)

Age: 6+ Player: 2-4 Playtime: 30-40 min.

Publisher: KOSMOS

  • Nominated for Kinderspiel des Jahres 2012 (2012 Children's Game of the Year - Germany)

"Spinnengift und Krötenschleim" ("Spider Poison and Toad Slime") is a simple game for the whole family that is fun not only for children but also for adults. Children must first make strategic considerations. You have to decide where to drag your witch so that you can get to magic chips with few holes before the other players. Because the fewer holes a magic chip has, the greater the chance of winning it and perhaps even creating a new monster.

It features a game mechanism similar to Pop Belly.

The goblin is loose in the witch's kitchen!

Whoever finds the ingredients can put a magic chip in the kettle. But only when it overflows does a monster come out! Who can make the cauldron burst?

There is a magic chip on each of the 25 fields of the witch's kitchen. Each player receives a witch figure, which he places next to a field with a magic chip. The ingredient cards are laid out face down around the game board. The orders of witches, the monsters and the magic cauldron are ready next to the game board.

It's Sven's turn. His red witch is standing next to a magic chip. The magic chip has three holes, so Sven has to find three ingredients. The cube determines which ingredients he has to find. Sven rolls the dice for the first time. The cube shows a cube root. Sven immediately reveals the correct card. It wasn't a problem either - after all, Dad had already turned up the card.

The second time he rolls the toad slime. Wasn't that in the lower left? Right! The third roll of the dice shows a stinky mushroom. Sven has also made a note of the position of this ingredient and reveals the correct card. Sven is happy that he didn't roll a second choke root, because he has no clue where the other two cards with the choke root are located. Since Sven has found all three ingredients, he receives an order of witches, which he proudly places in front of himself. In addition, he has won the magic chip and is allowed to put it in the magic cauldron.

Hooray!!! A monster falls out of the cauldron! This cannot be taken for granted, because sometimes it takes 4 or 5 magic chips for a monster to see the dim light of the witch's kitchen. Sven receives the monster and places it next to his order of witches. In this move, Sven has come a little closer to victory, since every order of witches and every monster counts one point. Of course, whoever has the most points in the end wins the game.

Sven takes a new monster from the supply and puts it in the cauldron. Secretly he hopes that it will be him again who creates another monster with a magic chip he has won. On his next turn, Sven will move his red witch to an adjacent space on which there is another chip with new tasks.

But now it's his sister Mia's turn first. Maybe she accidentally turns over one of the 5 goblin cards? Then their train would be over immediately and Sven, Mum and Dad would receive another order of witches - only poor Mia would not.

(first published in Germany by Hans im Glück as "Drunter & Drüber"

Just south of nowhere, there's the junction of the Mayfair & Rossdorf RR and the Turvy Trunk Line. Springing up from the desert like a tumbleweed lies the eccentric little town of Rossdorf. Like most western towns, Rossdorf has a Land Agent: Guy Dough, the brother of that wicked varmint Black Benny. A shrewd opportunist, Guy's done sold all the town land ('ceptin' the outhouses) four times over! Every acre in town that ain't got an outhouse on it is owned by the miners, the railroads, AND the fort captain. Just about a year ago, miners digging in the shadow of Fort Rossdorf struck the mother lode! But it wasn't gold, and it wasn't silver. No, my friend, it was just a little spring. Not any ordinary spring, though! It was a torrent of that mind-marbling drink the locals call “Wacky Water”!

Now that water's done what the sun and the wind couldn't do: it's made those landholders brave enough to take matters into their own hands. Now they'll use whatever means they can to bowl over the competition and lay claim to the only fertile spots left in town! Now the only thing stoppin' 'em is the Town Charter Amendment #5, which states: “No landholder may move, remove, or detonate any outhouse without a majority vote of the Town Citizens...” Now one thing's for sure: something’s gonna stink in Rossdorf, purty darn soon.....

In Wacky Wacky West you and your fellow townfolk place track tiles, street tiles, and river tiles hoping to destroy your rivals' buildings. Every time someone tries to build over a precious outhouse, the town votes! You try to enlist your supporters (represented by cards) to vote with you to stop or encourage the play of certain tiles -perhaps saving some of your buildings or taking out those of your dastardly opponents.

CATAN - Traders & Barbarians - Extension for 5-6 Players

Entdecker - Im Reich der Wüstensöhne (not available in English)

Age: 6+ Player: 2-4 Platine: 30-40 Min.

Publisher: KOSMOS

Ten years after the "Entdecker" first set sail in a beautiful new Teuber play world, Klaus Teuber is now sending them to the "realm of the sons of the desert".

You and your fellow players slip into the role of traders and explore the desert with caravans. You are looking for valuable goods such as frankincense, myrrh, salt and precious stones.

You discover card by card, on which either desert or parts of oases are depicted. If you can lay out a part of an oasis appropriately, you can place one of your 4 explorer figures on it.

Once an oasis has been fully discovered, the oasis is scored. Action spaces with goods, camels, water and rumors are shown on the oasis cards. Since all explorer figures are of different heights, the players decide in descending order of their figures for one action each.

  • Whoever decides on a commodity receives a corresponding commodity tile, which he places on one of his camel cards lays.
  • If you choose a camel, you receive a camel card that offers space for two more goods.
  • Those who opt for water are less helpless in the desert: they can move on with their caravan, for example, or buy a second train.
  • If you choose a rumor tile, you can increase or decrease the value of a commodity on the rumor board by 1 or 2 gold.

When the last card from the pile has been drawn, everyone has one more turn. Then the game ends and you win if you have the most valuable goods.

CATAN Geographies - Germany

Age: 10+ Player: 3-4 Playtime: 45-75 min.

Publisher: KOSMOS

Settle Germany! Build town halls, erect the Brandenburg Gate, adorn Dresden with the Frauenkirche, let the Wartburg Castle tower over Eisenach, and build the Longest Road between Hamburg and Nuremberg.

The map of Germany is composed of terrain hexes and fields with important German cities and landmarks. The terrains produce the resources lumber, wool, brick, ore, and grain. You need these resources to build roads and place town halls on city intersections and landmarks on landmark intersections. On each turn, it is determined which of the terrains produce resources. This is done by rolling 2 dice - which is why each terrain has a production number. If a "3" is rolled, for example, all terrains marked with a "3" produce their respective resource type.

To receive production, you must have a town hall adjacent to a terrain whose number was rolled. At the beginning of the game, each player already owns 3 town halls, which is why there should be plenty of resource income. And even if sometimes you lack certain resources, don't worry about it. You may trade resources to your heart's content.

Building a road costs you 1 lumber and 1 brick. Roads are used to reach the intersections where you can build town halls or landmarks.

Each town hall costs 1 lumber, 1 wool, 1 brick, and 1 grain and is worth 1 victory point. Therefore, each player has 3 victory points at the beginning of the game. You win the game if you are the first to reach 12 victory points in a 3-player game and 10 victory points in a 4-player game.

The landmarks have a special status. If you pay 2 ore and 1 grain to place a landmark on its associated intersection, you will not receive any resource production from the surrounding terrains, because landmarks are neutral. Instead, you receive the reward depicted next to the illustration of the respective landmark in the outer area of the game board, and you may place a town hall on this illustration - another victory point for you.

The game includes 12 detailed landmark pieces, which you can build on the corresponding landmark intersections: Berlin's Brandenburg Gate, the Cologne Cathedral, Lübeck's Holsten Gate, the Dresden Frauenkirche, Trier's Porta Nigra, and so forth. But not only the monuments are eye candies ... Michael Menzel illustrated the huge Germany game map with loving attention to detail - no two terrain hexes look the same, each of them was painted individually.

CATAN - Cities & Knights for Windows / Mac

Digital CATAN Adaptation for Windows XP / Vista / 7 and Mac OS X bis 10.8

Developer: Brettspielwelt GmbH

Publisher: CATAN GmbH

Please note: The game is not available anymore. It has been replaced with the CATAN Universe.

For the first time, the most popular CATAN expansion was also available as a PC adaptation with strong computer opponents. It took a long time to fine-tune the artificial intelligence of the computer opponents so that the game would be challenging also for experienced Catan players. For this reason, Klaus Teuber as the designer of the original board game was closely involved in the development, and together with the CATAN Online World team the new version was created.

There are a total of eight different computer opponents to choose from. The extensive campaign includes many varied scenarios, from the simple Base Game to diverse Seafarers scenarios (Oceania and Heading for New Shores, among others) to Cities & Knights scenarios in combination with Seafarers (Greater Catan C&K, among others).

The individual scenarios of the campaign can be activated step by step; afterwards, you can also play the scenarios individually, using different options such as “Friendly Robber” or “Card Stack”. Spoken story sequences develop the thread of the campaign story. An interactive tutorial helps newcomers get started with the game, and for the skilled player extensive game statistics are available.

  • CATAN base game, Seafarers, and Cities & Knights in one game
  • Campaign with 20 varied scenarios
  • Story sequences between the scenarios, with voice output
  • Strong computer opponents
  • Game settings can be used in any combination
  • Comprehensive tutorial

Dice Game

Anno 1701 - Das Kartenspiel (not available in English)

Age: 10+ Players: Playing time: 60-90 min.

Publisher: KOSMOS

On behalf of the Queen, your ship reaches the coast of an unknown, fertile island in 1701. An ideal place to build a settlement! Also on behalf of the queen, your opponent founds a settlement on the opposite side of the island.

Who will lead their settlement to success faster and win the queen's favor?

Each of you builds their settlement with cards showing pioneers, village centers, and landscapes. It is your goal to upgrade your pioneers to settlers, the settlers to citizens, and the citizens to merchants. Because the higher the ranks of your residents, the higher the queen's favor in the form of favor points. If you are the first to reach 7 favor points, you win the game.

To upgrade the residents, you need goods. A settler is satisfied with food and cloth. Citizens and merchants are more demanding. They need rum and tobacco for their social advancement. You can't harvest rum and tobacco in the regions of your settlement.

To get these luxury goods, you have to go on a trade voyage with your ship. But dangers lurk along the way. A fight against pirates can seriously damage your ship. To avoid this, you should take precautions and upgrade your settlement with cannon foundries or weaving mills. It will make your ship stronger and faster, increasing your chances to discover foreign peoples you can buy the coveted luxury goods from.

Publisher: KOSMOS

In 1701, the queen commissions you to explore a distant archipelago and build a flourishing settlement. She will reward you for this with favor points.

At the beginning of the game, each of you has already discovered an island - their home island - where they own a small settlement with a village center and simple settlers. Although these beginnings are modest, the terrain tiles of a home island offer enough goods to build important buildings and ships there over time.

The game board shows a vast sea with cut-out areas in which hexagonal island tiles are laid out face down. You explore the archipelago with your ships and establish colonies. If you want to reap royal favor points, you would do well to establish your colonies on island tiles with tobacco and rum plantations. These goods are needed to settle citizens, merchants, and aristocrats on the home islands, who in turn earn you royal favor points.

The queen also rewards the player who achieves the greatest sea power or the greatest trading power. If you want to achieve the greatest sea power or trading power, you must found colonies on island tiles with cannon or trade symbols or build corresponding buildings on your island.

Anno 1701 is an exciting race for the queen's favor. If you skillfully trade goods and gold with your opponents, use clever tactics with your ships and do not risk a riot among your inhabitants, in the end you will be ahead of the game and the first to achieve the 5 favor points required to win.

The trade between the players and the constant scramble for the greatest sea power, the trading power, and the satisfaction of the inhabitants guarantee a high level of interactivity.

CATAN Seefahrer - Die Kolonien (not available in English)

Age: 12+ Players: 3-4 Playing time: 90-150 min.

Publisher: KOSMOS

To mark the 10th anniversary of the CATAN - Seafarers Extension, KOSMOS-Verlag brought out the exciting scenario The Colonies. Long-time CATAN fans will remember that Die Siedler von CATAN – Das Buch zum Spielen ("The Settlers of CATAN – The Book for Playing") already featured a scenario named The Colonies. The 10th anniversary scenario is a revised version with additional game components.

New frame parts, overview cards, additional sea hexes, volcano hexes, gold river hexes, jungle hexes, and 92 colony tiles are also part of the anniversary package, as well as completely new playing pieces created for Catan: 4 warships, 20 bases, and a black pirate.

The Catanian home island is located on the left side of the game board; on the right side, there are two large islands separated by water - the colonial region, whose nature is still veiled at the moment, meaning that the nine terrain hexes each of these islands consists of challenge the players' spirit of discovery.

Tintenherz (not available in English)

Age: 10+ Players: 2-6 Playing time: 30-45 min.

Publisher: KOSMOS

Based on the novel "Tintenherz" by Cornelia Funke.

Showdown in Capricorn's village. The dreaded shadow has appeared: All players must find the right words together so that the shadow turns against its master, the evil Capricorn, and the world is freed from this evil. To do this, they have to support Meggie and Fenoglio and use the displayed alphabetic characters to form words for given tasks.

If Meggie reaches the goal first, all players have won together. However, if Capricorn is the first to reach the goal, the game is lost ...

The board is composed of twenty-five squares with partly face-up and partly face-down letter tiles placed on them. At the beginning of the game, 12 of a total of 25 letter tiles are face up, i.e., their letter side points upwards. The playing pieces representing the heroine Meggie and the evil adversary Capricorn are placed on the starting space of a track consisting of nine circular spaces along the edge of the game board. The figure of Fenoglio, who supports Meggie, and the black figure of the "shadow" who wants to help Capricorn to victory move across the squares of the game board that contain the letter tiles.

The common goal of all players is not to let evil - in the form of Capricorn - win. To this end, problems have to be solved within a time frame set by an hourglass, meaning that you must find the words requested on task cards, for example: "Name a tree" or "Name a bird."

When solving a problem, you may only use the letters that are currently revealed - however, a letter may appear multiple times in the word. For example, in accordance with this rule the three letters "P", O"," and "E" could be used to form the word "POPE."  If you have found a valid word, you are rewarded with a book chip.

For finding the longest word, you even receive 2 chips. Each of you can only propose one word. If the participating players have found enough words (the more players participate, the more words must be found), Meggie is moved forward one space on the track, toward the target - otherwise, the evil Capricorn must be moved. Which letters are face up and which face down is subject to constant change. A letter tile the good Fenoglio stops on may be revealed.

The evil "shadow", however, is more powerful: all of the letter tiles it crosses must be turned over again. Step by step, fate in the form of two dice decides which of the two playing pieces - Fenoglio or the "shadow" - moves in which direction and how many spaces.

The game ends as soon as either Meggie or Capricorn reaches the last space of the track. If Meggie arrives before Capricorn, the evil is banished and all of you have won the game, although the player who was able to collect the most "books" contributed a bit more to victory. If Capricorn reaches the last space of the track before Meggie, then all of you have lost the game.

Entdecker - Im Reich der Jadegöttin (not available in English)

Age: 8+ Players: 2-4 Playing time: 45-60 min.

Publisher: KOSMOS

The game follows the tradition of the popular games Entdecker and Die neuen Entdecker.

Entdecker - Im Reich der Jadegöttin (translates “Explorers - In the Realm of the Jade Goddess”) does not just shift the scene of the action from the high seas to the deep jungle but concentrates completely on the essential element of the explorer games: discovery.

At the beginning of the game, a square cross consisting of a central tile and four “arms” is laid out. Each arm is divided into five square tiles that show parts of a jungle and parts of "forgotten cities" in the realm of the jade goddess.

With your jeeps, you penetrate deeper and deeper into the jungle by placing a new, matching tile while standing on a tile of an arm or on a tile that has already been discovered. Whenever you place a tile, you may - but do not have to - place one or more of your own archaeologists there.

As soon as a tile is placed, that completes a district of the forgotten city (this is the case when contiguous parts of the forgotten city are completely surrounded by jungle or the edge of the playing field defined by the cross), the artefacts and gold pieces depicted in this district are excavated and distributed.

The player who left the most archaeologists in the completed district receives the lion's share of the  artifacts, the player with the second most archeologists receives half, etc. - The gold found in the district is not divided up in this fashion. Everyone who has at least one archaeologist in the district receives as many gold pieces as depicted in the district. It is therefore important that at least one of your archaeologists participates in each excavation.

Those who "discover" on their own will hardly have a chance of victory. Gold is particularly important to prevail in the struggle for valuable artifacts: it allows you to buy bonus turns, place various archaeologist on a tile, or exchange artifacts.

Ultimately, all artifacts are worth one point, but if you succeed in assembling complete statues of the jade goddess, each consisting of four parts, from the various artefacts, you will get many bonus points that are decisive for victory.

CATAN - Dice Game Plus

Age: 7+ Players: 2-4 Playing time: 20-40 min.

Publisher: CATAN Studio

In the summer of 2006, Klaus Teuber sent in two prototypes for a CATAN dice game. The first prototype was more easily accessible, the second one was strongly based on the board game but a little less accessible to people who did not know the board game.

Klaus' favorite was the second prototype because it provided a more Catanian feel, and thus more competition and interaction. In the end, however, the publisher opted for the more easily accessible dice game. Klaus was able to understand this decision but also wanted to make the second prototype available to all CATAN fans, under the name Dice Game Plus.

CATAN for Xbox 360

Digital CATAN Adaptation for Xbox 360

Developer: Big Huge Games

Publisher: Microsoft

CATAN's Xbox 360 adaptation stands out because of the reliable artificial intelligence of its computer opponents and its beautiful graphic design.

Big Huge Games, one of the top developers of PC games, was excited to tackle this project. Brian Reynolds, the developer of such classics as “Civilization II” and “Rise of Nations,” is himself a big fan of the board game and specializes in the realization of demanding AI opponents. A very productive collaboration with Klaus Teuber developed, resulting in a most outstanding AI.

The developers of Big Huge Games have accomplished awesome things in other areas as well. The game adapts very well to Xbox‘s simple operational concept and also allows a smooth game flow over the Internet. Up to 4 players compete according to the rules of the CATAN base game. Additional features such as permanently available communication via headset are a perfect fit for a highly interactive game such as CATAN.

"I had no doubts that Brian Reynolds would do a good job, and the first version of the game already exceeded even my greatest expectations. The AI is so good that, as a start, I lost several games in a row. This version for Xbox is really an awesome achievement."

Gather 2-4 players and build Elasund, the first city on the island of Catan. This may sound like a peaceful endeavor - but it isn't. In a city that seems to have far too little space, soon a fierce struggle ensues: everyone wants to snatch the best building sites, build the buildings that generate the most income, and secure as many victory points as possible.

Elasund is growing rapidly and Catanians are streaming into the city, eager to make a fortune! You are appointed to help the city develop. You heed the call to drive the city's growth and prosperity.

Hire workers, acquire building materials. What will your next build be? The competition is eager to excel and claim all of the credit! Limited resources early on will limit you to a few small buildings. Your influential connections will provide you with all the necessary building permits. In Elasund, nothing works without building permits!

Once buildings are constructed, they can generate either gold or influence for you. Soon you can start going after bigger projects! Soon enough you may become involved in grander projects, such as building the church or the city walls.

But beware of your competitors! They may try to leverage their way into your neighborhood with their own permits!

If you don’t watch them closely enough, they might attempt a hostile takeover of your buildings!

Barbarossa (Klaus Teuber Classics)

Age: 10+ Players: 3-4 Playing time: 60-75 min.

Publisher: Mayfair Games

  • Spiel des Jahres 1988 (Game of the Year 1988, Germany)

A modern classic, Barbarossa is a great game for family and friends! Enter the fantastic world of this casual riddle-solving game. Share laughs with your friends or family as you create and master riddles!

First, each player forms objects out of modeling clay. Since the item is a riddle, your clay figure will only show rough contours. So there's no need to be an artist when you mold the rough shape of a dinosaur or a bug!

  • “Is it a living thing?”
  • “Is it bigger than me?”

... these questions might bring you closer to solving the other players' riddles.

When you solve a riddle, you are rewarded with points. You can also earn points when your riddle gets solved, but only if it's not too easy and not too hard! You earn bonus points if your riddle is solved in the middle of the guessing process, but you lose points if it is answered early (too easy) or late (too hard)! Earning points is the key to victory, so put on your thinking cap and mold your best riddles.

You begin with nothing more than your own two hands, and each day will bring you a host of new experiences and adventures. Hunting bears and wolves? Building chests and furniture? Working hides and skins? Not a problem for you!

Your goal is to settle down with a roof over your head, sheep to breed, and a field to sow your grain. To do this, you will need the help of the other settlers in the village. Easily done! If you supply a sword to Jared, he will give you a bag of seeds in return. Osmund needs a new chest and offers you some sheep. Candamir would like new windows and can help you build your new house.

Again and again you head out for the wilderness, hunting bears and wolves, collecting honey and rare herbs. But you must be cautious!

With a browser-based card editor you were able to create your own Catan (no longer available).

Anno 1503 - Expansion - Aristokraten und Piraten (not available in English)

Age: 10+ Players: 2-4 Playing time: 75-115 min.

Publisher: KOSMOS

Place the expansion board (1) adjacent to the game board of the base game and fill it with new island tiles. There are cards with the luxury goods silk, marble, and precious stones (2) as well as pirate nests (3).

You can only win the game if you take possession of islands with luxury goods (4). But that is not easy, as pirates (5) armed to the teeth are blocking the way.

Every time you move onto a pirate space, a pirate card (6) is revealed. If the pirate defeats you in battle, the ship has to go back to the nearest port for repairs.

So it's time to upgrade your ships with cannons so that they can let the pirates have it. You also upgrade your home islands: each of you places an aristocrat island (7) adjacent to their home island. Settling aristocrats on this island costs luxury goods. The more aristocrats you settle, the higher your advantages in the game.

The luxury goods can also be used to build a castle on the aristocrat island in 9 stages. For each completed construction stage, you receive an action card (8). For example, you can use the “privateer” to steal a luxury good from another player or build cannons faster with the “inventor”.

If only one of three possible victory points (3 trade agreements, 3 merchants, or 4 public buildings) is accepted on the old game board, two out of three possible victory points must be earned on the new game board. The conquest of two pirate nests, the completion of the castle, or the construction of 3 aristocrat buildings (9) count as one victory point.

Overall, the Anno 1503 expansion offers new strategies, more depth, and an enhanced gaming experience.

Publisher: Mayfair Games

Each player has a set of buildings to place. Each of you must build a set of buildings. To build a building, you need a whole cartload of resources: 1 wood, 1 brick, and 1 grain.

The roll of the die determines how far the carts will move. When you stop next to a resource you need, you can load the resource into your cart.

When your cart is full, you get to build a new building! You must place it in the right spot in the village. Then you return the resources to the board so they can be collected again!

Once you have built all of your buildings, you begin collecting resources again to build the City Hall. The player who builds the City Hall wins the game!

Of course, children are also encouraged to play with the wonderful wooden buildings to create their own games and adventures on Catan!

Klaus Teubers Spielwiese (not available in English at this time)

Digital Browser Games

Developer / Publisher: CATAN GmbH

Klaus Teubers Spielwiese offered variants of the board games as digital adaptations for the web browser, later changed into PlayCatan, and in 2014 continued as Klaus Teuber's Web Games until it was discontinued in 2017.

With the launch of Klaus Teubers Spielwiese (translates: "playground"), the Barbarossa Online Puzzle was revised, and Entdecker Light (later Oceania) started at the same time.

Starship CATAN Light (2003), Multi-CATAN (2005), The Settlers of CATAN - The Dice Game (2007), and the CATAN Puzzle (2009) were added later.

Multi-CATAN

This was a round-based online game on an almost infinitely large playing field, where six players always see each other at the same time. Without having to wait for the other player to finish their turn, neighboring players compete for the best building sites. A game of Multi-CATAN extended over 72 dice rolls, which were spread over 7 game days.

This “parallel” game concept differed fundamentally from all CATAN variants and scenarios known at the time and formed the conceptual basis for the later CATAN - Big Game

Das Steiff Spiel (not available in English)

Age: 7+ Players: 3-6 Playing time: 20-30 min.

Publisher: KOSMOS

Teddy’s friends want to surprise their little darling with lots of nice presents in the morning.

The game board (1) shows a running field on which Teddy's friends scurry back and forth. At the start, everyone grabs three gift cards (2) and tries to get them to the birthday teddy’s room (3) as quickly as possible. If you choose the blue die to move forward, you will slowly but surely move forward.

It is not at all safe to use the fast red die. Because if you do this, you always have to reckon with the possibility that you must exchange your gift cards for the cards of an opponent who shouts "swap." Gee whiz! You'd have to be stupid to use the red die.

Yes and no.

If you grabbed very unattractive gifts with negative numbers at the start, you can aim at provoking a swap with the red die and then hold better cards in your hand. Or do you have good cards and everyone thinks they're bad? In any case, this is a great opportunity to bluff your opponents. By the way, the ownership of gift cards also changes when two or more teddies meet on a field and one of them shouts “jostle.” Then the players blindly draw a gift card from each other.

Here and there a banana peel is lying around, and when one of the birthday teddy's friends steps on it, gifts are sent flying and get lost. Each time one of the friends arrives in the birthday teddy’s room with great presents, the birthday teddy (4) advances one space in the direction of its room. When it finally gets there, the game ends and the player who brought the birthday teddy the most attractive gifts wins this turbulent game.

Age: 10+ Players: 2 Playing time: 40-60 min.

Publisher: KOSMOS

Hordes of daring adventurers answer the call. Everyone needs tools and lots and lots of whiskey. But dollars are rare!

Then you step onto the stage and the game begins. You just print a couple of promissory notes and press them into the dirty hands of the have-nots. $ 8 for Jenny Cassidy, not because of her beautiful blue eyes but because she knows how to use the gun. $ 6 for Jonas Smith, a better sort of gold digger! Well, you still have a dollar left for poor Janice Bone.

Now you just hope that the boozers don't get whacked before they've brought you enough nuggets in return for your generosity. You need the nuggets to become the most respected citizens of Tuzza-City and for that vexing payday.

Because on payday we have to redeem the promissory notes we've issued. But woe betide us if we don't have enough nuggets!

Die Siedler von CATAN - Historische Szenarien II (not available in English)

Age: 10+ Players: 3-4 Playing time: 60-90 min.

Publisher: KOSMOS

In the historical scenarios you harvest, trade, and build just as in the CATAN base game. However, additional simple rules allow historical events to be played out.

You need the CATAN base game to play these scenarios.

Troy

According to legend, Troy was besieged by the Greeks for 10 years. We do not know whether the reason for this was the abduction of beautiful Helen or the strategic location of Troy on the Dardanelles.

In this historical scenario, the players take on the roles of the neighboring peoples of Troy and the Greek city of Mycenae. At the beginning of the game, each player receives a secret decision card with which they either side with Troy or Mycenae. The game board shows Greece and Asia Minor.

At the beginning of the game, you place your first settlements and roads as usual. In your build phase, you may also donate resources. If your secret card shows Mycenae, you place lumber or grain face down beside the game board. If the card shows Troy, you secretly donate ore or wool.

Once 10 of these donated cards are beside the game board, you reveal 7 of them. The city that received more resources gains an advantage, which at the same time earns the supporters of this city additional victory points.

Those who donate not only help their city but also receive additional commerce points. Commerce points allow you to build trade ships, which brings you great advantages in the game.

If you have cleverly expanded your sphere of influence on land by building cities and settlements and gained supremacy at sea with your ships, you will ultimately have the edge on your opponents.

The Great Wall

During its long existence, the Chinese Empire was repeatedly a worthwhile target for peoples from the northern steppe. To protect themselves, over the course of centuries the Chinese built a great wall on the northern border of their empire.

In this historical scenario, you take on the roles of Chinese princes. Each of you is responsible for a section of the Great Wall and must fortify it sufficiently during the course of the game. If you neglect your task, the horsemen of the steppe will overrun the wall. As a result, the hexes behind the wall are occupied by the horsemen of the steppe and no longer produce, and you as the responsible player lose one victory point.

The game board shows the northern part of ancient China and the approximate course of the Great Wall. At the beginning of the game, each of you establishes two settlements. In addition, each of you places a border settlement on their wall section. Then you settle as usual.

Needless to say that as Chinese princes, you want to increase your influence by building roads, settlements, and cities. You can take on additional building projects to build wall sections in 5 stages. The higher the wall gets, the more the building costs increase. When certain numbers are rolled, the horsemen of the steppe advance toward the wall.

If a section of the wall is not high enough, the steppe riders break through and occupy valuable hexes behind the wall. You can use knights to drive them off. Knights are also ideal for redirecting the horsemen of the steppe in front of the wall to the wall sections of your opponents.

The first player to reach 10 victory points wins.

Chip-Chip Hurra (not available in English)

Age: 6+ Players: 2-4 Playing time: 20-30 min.

Publisher: KOSMOS

Hello, we are little Robbies from Professor Rastlos's workshop. Freshly screwed together, we just have to get smart. We need chips for that!

With the help of a catapult, you throw a chip onto the game board. You should aim for a space near a Robby of your color.

Now each of you may move a Robby to the space the chip landed on. When several Robbies have gathered around the chip, a trial of strength takes place.

There is a die hidden in every Robby. When you lift your Robby, it appears. Yes, and the Robby whose die shows the most pips is stronger, and you put a chip into its back.

But watch out! Every time you draw a Robby, the die inside rotates. If you are the first player to equip each of your two Robbies with 4 chips, you win the game.

Starfarers of CATAN

Age: 12+ Players: 3-6 Playing time: 90-150 min.

Publisher: Mayfair Games

This is the first edition from 2000. An updated version called CATAN - Starfarers is available since 2019, containing new art, new game pieces, and carefully revised rules.

The foray into space, sometime near the year 2700 A.D. Compete for the prestigious post of Ambassador to the Galactic Council. To attain this lofty position, you must leave Terra and the known planets to explore and colonize the galaxy, while working to establish trade with alien cultures, encounter aliens, and defeat pirates. Glory and victory go to the brave and astute explorer who luck smiles upon.

The known worlds lie at one end of the game board where each of the 3 or 4 players begin from known solar systems, each with 3 planets producing resources needed for the travels into deep space.

Each of you begins with 2 colonies and a spaceport (all components are made from plastic). The spaceport makes starships to transport your new colonies and trade posts to distant lands. Throughout the game, all the colonies and spaceports enable the production of resources when the dice match the numbers of adjacent planets. Resources are traded for colony ships, trade ships, fleet upgrades or freight rings, booster rockets, and cannons. Beware as you explore—some planets are covered in ice, and some conceal dangerous pirates.

Die Siedler von CATAN - Historische Szenarien I (not available in English)

Age: 10+ Players: 3-4 Playing time: 60-90 min.

Publisher: KOSMOS

In the historical scenarios you harvest, trade, and build just as in the CATAN base game. However, additional simple rules allow historical events to be played out. You need the CATAN base game to play these scenarios.

Alexander the Great

In 334 BC, the young Macedonian king Alexander left his Macedonian homeland with about 30,000 foot soldiers and 5,000 horsemen.

In the year 324, only ten years later, Alexander was ruler of an empire that stretched from Greece to India. As advisors on Alexander's staff, you can relive the great historical campaign.

Unlike in normal scenarios, you do not establish settlements at the beginning of the game. You travel with Alexander's army - represented by an Alexander figure - along a route marked with green arrows.

As soon as Alexander is moved to an intersection depicting a temple, a settlement is established: The player who offers the most resources required for a settlement may build the settlement. Once you own a settlement, you may build roads off the beaten track to develop new land and build settlements and cities there according to the normal rules.

A reserve pile provides you with resources needed during the first half of the game (initially, there are no settlements); in each round, each of you draws a card from this pile. There is an event chip on some intersections.

If you are the player who best supports Alexander with resources when a river is crossed, a famine occurs, or a battle is fought, you receive the chip and thereby the chance to earn special victory points.

The game ends as soon as one of you has 14 victory points or Alexander has arrived at the destination.

Cheops

Ancient Egypt had its first heyday between 2800 and 2200 BC. The fertile strip along the Nile granted people plentiful harvests and well-fed cattle.

Each player embodies an Egyptian princely family at the time of Pharaoh Cheops. He wants you to build a great pyramid for him for the time after his death. But this is not so easy.

There are many quarries in the south of Egypt, but wood and ore have to be imported. Tapping the productive ore deposits on the other side of the Red Sea or conquering the wooded areas of Palestine early on would thus be a good move.

The game board shows the Nile with its delta. In the northeast lies the densely wooded Palestine and in the east the Sinai Peninsula. Each of you founds 3 settlements on the banks of the Nile. If you want to improve your ore and wood income, you have to build roads and ships (included in the game) toward Palestine and Sinai and establish settlements there.

In addition, every now and then you should contribute a construction stage to the pyramid of the pharaoh. This costs 1 brick and 1 ore. If you contribute the most construction stages, you receive the “Pharaoh's Blessing” card, which is worth 3 victory points. If you have contributed the fewest construction stages, you receive the "Pharaoh's Curse" card and lose 2 victory points.

The game ends when a player has reached 12 victory points or when the pyramid is completed after 30 construction stages.

As knightly squirrels, we collect hazelnuts and watch out for evil robbers.

Hazelnuts and robbers are cards in the 8 stacks assigned to the spaces on the board.

You roll the die and move your squirrel to a space. You secretly look at the top card of the corresponding stack. The card shows the robber Leo Lynx. What a shame - had you drawn a hazelnut card, you'd be allowed to place it in front of you. The robber card, however, must be returned face down to the stack.

You make a mental note, though, that  Leo Lynx is on top of this stack. As soon as the next player moves onto this space, you'll shout, “Leo Lynx!”

For your warning cry, you will be rewarded with 2 points on the scoring track. In addition, my opponent loses all of their hazelnuts.

Since the robbers lurk in every stack, it is important to bring the hazelnuts you have collected to the hazelnut stash as soon as possible. They are safe there and score points on the scoring track. The player with the most points wins the game.

In an exciting duel with your opponent, you expand the settlements and cities of your principality by means of units (Knights and Trade Fleets) and buildings such as Garrisons, Libraries, Churches, etc. The German version of the game, Die Siedler von CATAN - Das Kartenspiel für zwei Spieler, was published in 1996.

At the beginning of the game, each player places a small principality consisting of 2 settlements, 1 road, and 6 regions.

If the number of one of your regions is rolled, you receive the resource of that region. You need resources to “build” new cards above or below your settlements. Knights help you obtain the coveted “Knight Token,” a Garrison offers protection from brigands. You can also build more roads and settlements and upgrade your settlements to cities. Action cards such as “The Black Knight,” “Arsonist,” or “Merchant” add more excitement to the game. The first player to have 12 victory points wins. Despite bearing a close resemblance to the CATAN board game, the CATAN - Card Game is quite different!

In Hallo Dachs! (translates "Hello Badger!") everybody tries to find their favorite foods. These are shown on the cards placed face down around the game board. After playing for a while, you and your opponents already know some of the cards. Now it is your turn, and you decide to move your figure to a forest clearing marked with a "3" number token.

Now you must find 3 favorite foods of the badger. You roll a "6". A beetle is shown next to the “6” on the game board. No problem - you know where to find a card with a beetle and reveal it.

You roll a "2". You also know where to find a strawberry. Another “6”. Hmmm, where did you see a second beetle? Then you remember the place. Now you have found 3 favorite foods and can turn the number token over.

There is the badger! The red points are victory points. The first player to collect 20 victory points first wins the game. On your next turn, you try to find four favorite foods in a row. That earns you even more victory points!
