Compatibility between the different English CATAN editions
The previous and current editions of CATAN can be used together. Certain product combinations have distinct card backs, which can be resolved by purchasing CATAN-sized card sleeves or replacement cards. Some accessories may not be compatible across editions due to changes in component size or design.

Replacement Cards
All games have received new internal art. To ensure compatibility with previous editions, replacement cards can be purchased from the CATAN Shop.
All games have received new box sizes, new box art, new internal art (board pieces, cards, etc.), and new rulebook layouts/designs.
The size of the wooden road pieces has increased slightly.
All 5-6 player expansions use purple instead of brown for one of the additional wood colors.
All 5-6 player expansions now also include the “paired player” rule.
The base game no longer contains port markers. For players who want port tokens, they are included in Seafarers.
Seafarers contains additional tokens and now includes tiles for the Wonders of Catan.
Several game pieces have been redesigned or had their colors changed.
Defender cards have been replaced with tokens.
City improvement flip charts have been replaced with boards.
Wagon tiles replace the cards from previous editions.
All terrain pieces are now individual hexes.
Includes an additional simplified rule presentation for new players.
Explorers & Pirates 5-6 Player Expansion: All terrain pieces are now individual hexes.
