From March 3 - 7, 2010, the Festival International des Jeux was held in Cannes to celebrate the games world and its stars. The organizers welcomed world-famous game author Klaus Teuber as a guest of honor. During the As d'Or awards ceremony at the legendary Palais des Festivals, the inventor of Catan was honored with an hommage to his lifetime achievement. Every year since 1989, the most important French critics' choice award for parlor games is handed out in the Palais des Festivals - which, by the way, is the same venue where the famous Cannes Film Festival takes place. The As d' Or (Golden Ace) is awarded in the categories games for adults, games for children, and Critics' Special Award. In 2010, the As d'Or jury bestowed a very special honor upon German game inventor Klaus Teuber. With an hommage to his lifetime achievement, the jury commemorated his extraordinary accomplishment in the games world and thus acknowledged his multi-faceted work. Around 20 Teuber games have been published in Germany since 1988. The Settlers of Catan, released in 1995, is his most famous game. Since many years, this multiple award-winning classic is very popular, not only in Germany but worldwide. Today, Teuber dedicates a great part of his time to the now existing Catan universe with all its theme expansions, computer adaptations, and a large number of fans. With roughly 120,000 visitors, the Festival International des Jeux is the largest game convention in France. Every year, games enthusiasts of all ages meet in the town on the Côte d'Azur in the south of France, to play traditional games such as chess or bridge and modern board games and video games. In 2010, when the Catan National Championship was held in the context of the 5-day festival, The Settlers of Catan occupied center stage too. The winner, who was presented with his trophy by Klaus Teuber himself, is entitled to show up at Wildenstein Castle in September waving the French flag and compete in the Official Catan World Championship.
