The Big Event for All Catan Fans.
How do you play Catan with an entire hall full of Catan fans? You have them play either many small, individual games or 'Catan – The Big Game.'
In the Big Game, any number of players play together on a long game map specially developed for this scenario. Each round, the moderator's dice roll determines the resource income for all players, after which the players trade and build until one player has reached 25 victory points. Catan – The Big Game thus provides a unique experience in a great atmosphere.
In 2005, the first Big Game ever took place in Chemnitz, Germany. 816 people participated – a world record!
The record wasn't surpassed until 2013: during Gen Con in Indianapolis, USA, 922 Catan enthusiasts participated in the Big Game. After turn 48, Brendon Harbor from Indianapolis came out on top. For this successful event, Mayfair Games was honored by Guinness World Records. A Guinness representative arrived from New York, to watch the event and subsequently present Larry Roznai, Mayfair's president, with the official certificate of having successfully set the world record for "the most people playing
Settlers of Catan simultaneously."
On the occasion of Catan's 20th anniversary in 2015, two further Big Game event were scheduled in this year.
In Essen 1040 participants in fact cracked the record of 2013.
Gen Con - Indianapolis
- Date: July 31, 2015
- Place: JW Marriot: White River Ballroom - Gen Con
In 2013 the world record for "the most people playing the Settlers of Catan simultaneously" was set on Gen Con. This year, on Friday, July 31st, there was another chance to play in The Big Game™ again in an attempt to break the previous record of 922 people. Unfortunately this goal was not reached but the fun was great nevertheless.
That year’s Big Game was also a Charity Event supporting Gen Con Charity partner, The Julian Center. The center supports victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and other life crises.
Spiel '15 - Essen
- Date: October 10, 2015
- Place: Hall 4 - Essen fair
More than 10 years have passed since the last Big Game in Germany, and now - just in time for Catan's 20th anniversary - there was another Big Game event at the world's largest board game fair in Essen. On October 10, 2015, 1040 players came together in hall 4 of the game fair and cracked the current world record. Klaus Teuber, the inventor of Catan, was also among the participants. The winner of that Catan - Big Game was Tim van den Bersselaar from the Netherlands.
