Catan Cup

Catan Championships

Many players enjoy playing games for fun, but they also desire to compete against the best opponents.

For this reason, players gathered in 1995 to play “The Settlers of Catan” at the “Deutsche Mannschaftsmeisterschaft im Brettspiel” (German Board Game Championship for Teams) finals.

Direct Links:

Since 1998, there have been annual Board Game Championships hosted by Spielezentrum Herne, Germany. At first, these tournaments were open only to players in Germany. Since these tournaments weren't offered in other countries, players from other countries also participated in the German tournaments. Eventually, more countries began hosting their own tournaments. Thus, in 2002 the first World Championship was held to include these players who were participating in tournaments outside Germany. To the present day, there have been players from more than 40 countries participating in the World Championships.

During the initial years, the Championships were hosted at the game fair “Internationalen Spieltage” in Essen, Germany. In 2008, for the first time, the World Championship was held at Gen Con Indy, the largest game fair in the US. Since then, World Championships are staged every two years. In 2010, the World Championship took place at Wildenstein Castle in Baden-Württemberg, Germany, and in 2012, once again in the US.

Since 2009, in the years between World Championships Europe's best Catan players meet in Vienna to determine the European champion.

Next Championships

The Next Championships

The Catan World Championship takes place every other year, alternating with the Catan European Championship. Therefore, the best Catan players worldwide will compete from October 10-12, 2014 in Berlin.

In the 2012 finals, players from Austria, Hong Kong, Lithuania, and Germany were pitted against each other. The Austrians prevailed, thereby scoring 40 points for the Worldwide All-time High Scores List!

Currently, Germany is at the top of this list, followed by the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and Finland. We keenly anticipate the 2014 World Championship!

The next Catan European Championship will take place from November 20-22, 2015. As two years ago, the event will be staged at the “Spielefest” in Vienna. Two participants from each European country may compete for the title. Prior to this, however, they must have come out as winners in the national championships of their home countries. Only real pros will thus compete with each other in the finals!

In the All-time High Scores List, Italy currently ranks before Germany, Austria, and the Czech Republic. Will it change in 2015?

By the way, the championship will be broadcast and narrated live on the Internet. In due time, the link to this broadcast will be provided here and in the News section.

European Catan Championship – All-time High Scores List

Due to the fact that, since 2008, the World Championship takes place every other year, in the odd-numbered years continental championships are staged. The European Championship has been carried out since 2009. An All-time High Scores list is available here, too; it refers only to the participants' rankings in the tournaments.

Awarding of Points for Nation Rankings

Normally, a nation may send up to 2 participants to a Catan Championship. The automatic qualification of a tournament winner from the year before may result in exceptions.

For each tournament, each nation only receives points for its best player. Therefore, if a nation sends 2 players, only the score of the higher ranking player is considered for the Nation Ranking. The points for the second player are not awarded; instead, the other participants of the tournament move up in the Nation Ranking. If nations send only one player, this player's score is considered for the Nation Ranking.

The awarding of points takes place as follows:
