The nef developed from the Nordic knarr and is a precursor of the cog. To indicate that a knight is activated, a gold-colored flag is placed next to him. As soon as the knight is deactivated, the flag is removed again and returned to the supply. The knights are available in the 3 familiar strength levels. The basic knight has to cope with the barbarians all by himself, the strong knight has one follower, and the mighty knight even two of them. A wooden ring symbolizes the wall you can build around a city to protect it. A gold-colored top piece makes the stave church one story higher and thus identifies the city as a metropolis. The design of the ships is based on the typical merchant ship of the Norsemen, the knarr.
