We are part of the entertainment/gaming industry. Today, our primary product is the successful board game The Settlers of Catan™, which comes with an array of line extensions. Before founding Catan GmbH, Klaus Teuber worked as an independent game designer.

Since 1988, Mr. Teuber has built an impressive portfolio of board games. In Germany alone, the basis game The Settlers of Catan™ has sold over 3 million units since 1995; approximately 10 million Germans have played the game and one out of two Germans are familiar with the name “Catan”.

Licensing Philosophy

Catan GmbH believes that great games are timeless creations. Klaus Teuber’s classic works offer lasting appeal and enduring commercial strength. Catan GmbH only sanctions licensees capable of carefully building solid, long-term publishing and marketing programs. It is also important that these firms function well within a creative, cooperative, and comprehensive strategic vision.

Since our game properties are adaptable to virtually every form and venue of popular entertainment – including literary, online, console, wireless, and film applications - we seek stable, visionary, team-oriented licensees. They must be fully devoted to product quality. Our licensees must work well with the other licensees and understand not only the property, but the ongoing needs of both the trade and (more importantly) the consumer.

Catan GmbH works with a host of active traditional game publishing partners. A core group including Kosmos Verlag, Mayfair Games, 999 Games, etc. publish The Settlers of Catan and its many extensions. As primary licensees, they also publish many of Mr. Teuber’s other successful board and card game designs.

Secondary licensees, such as Uberplay Entertainmant LLC and Jumbo B.V., supplement this program by publishing revised versions of Klaus Teuber’s classic games. Sub-licensees, like Cactus Game Designs and Inspiration Games, publish derivative works (e.g., The Settlers of Canaan and The Settlers of Zarahemla produced under license from Mayfair Games).

In the electronic space, Catan GmbH has licensed strong firms like Microsoft, Capcom, T-Online, etc. to create exceptional mass-market versions of The Settlers of Catan. Companies like Dartmoor and Take 2 publish German-language PC versions of other popular Klaus Teuber titles like Löwenherz (aka Domaine) and Sternenschiff Catan (aka Starship Catan).

Globally, 10 million Catan games have been sold. Catan is available in 18 different language versions and it is estimated that roughly 15 million people worldwide play Catan games on a regular basis! Overall, ours is an ever-growing family of license products and programs, all in keeping with a vision devoted to the cultivation of a vast, largely untapped community who enjoy high quality entertainment.
